Principal Message

Dear CMS Families,

We begin the week by honoring and acknowledging Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose legacy continues to inspire us to lead with compassion, equity, and service within our school community.

This week, students will continue NWEA Science testing during AST, following the special testing schedule. These assessments are not graded and provide valuable information that helps teachers reflect on instruction, monitor student growth, and plan appropriate academic supports.

Please note the following important updates for families:

  • No school on Tuesday due to a Staff Development Day for teachers.

  • Progress reports will be mailed home this week.

Families can continue to support students by ensuring they are well rested, arrive at school on time, bring a fully charged Chromebook, and approach testing with a calm and positive mindset.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to support every student’s growth and success.

California Youth Tobacco Survey Coming Soon

Our school is scheduled to participate in the California Youth Tobacco Survey (CYTS) on February 23, 2026. This statewide, anonymous, 30-minute online survey helps California better understand and prevent youth tobacco use. Selected classes will take the survey at school, and participation is completely voluntary.

If you prefer that your child not participate, you will have the opportunity to opt out—consent forms will be sent home at a later date. To learn more about CYTS, please visit the program website or contact CYTS@rti.org.

EduFin Club Update

We are excited to share that, after a long-anticipated wait, our Financial Literacy Club, EduFin, will officially begin on Wednesday, January 28th. The club will meet for nine sessions, held each Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.

A registration form will be resent for families who would like their student to participate.

Interested in Starting a New Club?
If your student would like to create a new club at Columbia, they can pick up a New Club Proposal Form in the Main Office. After submitting the completed form, our leadership team will meet with the student and the potential sponsor to review the idea and determine next steps.

New club proposals should show strong student interest, have an adult sponsor, and offer something unique that isn’t already available on campus.

Students can stop by the Main Office and see Dr. Tarumoto to get started. We’re excited to support new ideas and student-led opportunities!
