Mr. Daniel Aguilar Poo

Education:

University of California, Berkeley: B.A. American Studies

San Jose State University: M.A. Educational Counseling

San Jose State University: M.A. Education (Administration and Supervision)

Mr. Poo is entering his 15th year with the Sunnyvale School District and his sixth year as the proud principal of Columbia Middle School. Before stepping into the principal role, he served as an assistant principal at CMS for nine years. Over the years, Mr. Poo has loved being part of the CMS community—working closely with students, teachers, staff, families, and community partners. He firmly believes that schools have the power to transform communities when they recognize and build on the “funds of knowledge” students bring with them. At CMS, students are held to high expectations—but just as importantly, they know they are deeply cared for by the adults on campus.

Now in his 23rd year in education, Mr. Poo previously served in a variety of roles—including Interim Principal, Academic Dean, Dean of Students, and Counselor—working with high school students in East San Jose. His passion for education stems from a deep belief that it can empower young people to take control of their lives and open doors to opportunities they may never have imagined.

Outside of school, Mr. Poo enjoys spending time with his wife and three daughters, serving as President of the Sunnyvale Girls Softball League, and coaching the Sunnyvale Shockwave travel softball team. His experience as a coach mirrors his approach as a school leader—focused on relationships, growth, and teamwork. He is also active in his parish community.

This year, CMS continues to prioritize academic language development across disciplines and creating a safe, inclusive environment where all students can thrive—honoring the Sunnyvale Promise that every student is known by name, strength, and need, and is prepared to excel in high school and beyond, and to lead a life of joy and purpose.
